City and fortress

Sparkling in the sunlight, towering over the city, forbidding and inviting – the fortress is one of the most striking features of the city of Salzburg.  Founded in 1077 the fortress has almost 1.000 years of history to tell.

From the ramparts the view over the city in the north and the limestone Alps in the south is stunning! Inside collections of medieval musical instruments and weapons whisk us back to the time of knights and ladies.

The marvellous panelled walls and ceilings in the state rooms remind us of the wealth and power of Salzburg’s lords. The marionette museum enchants with the beautifully crafted puppets.

On this tour we will first explore the historic old town with the Getreidegasse and its courtyards, the old market square, cathedral, St Peter’s church and cemetery before taking the funicular up to the fortress.

On the way down you can stop for a refreshing beer or lemonade in Salzburg’s oldest brewery, founded in 1492!!
